With the Renoir hardware iteration, AMD can finally compete decently with Intel in the ultra-portable field, and not just in the budget segments as it has done in recent years.

Renoir currently consists of Ryzen Mobile 4000 APUs, including a Zen 2 processor with 8C/16T and an integrated Radeon Vega GPU with 8 calculation modules. They are all combined in a 15W package, with potentially higher FET settings if the thermal design allows it.

Intel follows the same approach with its Ice Lake and Tiger Lake Core U platforms, with which Renoir APUs will compete this year. AMD has an advantage over Ice Lake in the design and performance of the platform for both the CPU and GPU and only loses the GPU performance compared to Tiger Lake. Of course, implementations vary from laptop to laptop, so check out our detailed analysis to get a better idea of what makes these AMD Ryzen 4800U, 4700U and 4500U platforms work.

In addition, a current selection of Ryzen notebooks is available in your area. A detailed list of all available options will be discussed in more detail later in this article.

But first a brief introduction to the Ryzen U 4000 platform, starting with a summary of the specifications of the different APU variants and their key features.

AMD also offers a sub-series of Ryzen Pro U 4000 processors that fit into a handful of business laptops such as the ThinkPads T14/T14.

On the platform is the Ryzen 7 4800U APU, an eight-core processor with hexadecimal wires, combined with the powerful Radeon Vega iGPU. With a theoretical maximum throughput of 1.79 TFLOP, the 8 CU Vega implementation performs much better than the Intel Iris G7 graphics chip implemented in the Ice Lake Core U series, as it is rated at only 1.12 TFLOP. However, it is lower than the new TigerLake-i5 and -i7 Iris-Xe chips, although this again varies depending on implementations and assigned performance limits.

In addition, the Ryzen platform has a multi-threaded processor with twice as many cores/wires as the existing IceLake and TigerLake i7 cores. This difference is tested in actual use and the workload that can actually make all these cores work.

Also keep in mind that we will only see the Ryzen 7 4800U processor in a handful of high-end inventory management units with a high-performance thermal design.

AMD Ryzen 7 4800U/4700U laptops

The mid-range will be based on the Ryzen 7 4700U, an eight-core, eight-wire processor with a slightly less powerful Vega iGPU, but a solid counterpart to Intel’s current IceLake counterparts. In terms of value for money, it is a Ryzen 5 APU with 6 cores and 12 wires, where the Ryzen 3 budget option is an alternative to the existing Intel Comet Lake and Ice Lake Core i5 and i3.
