When I was a kid, I was a big fan of arcade games. I loved to go to the arcade and play Daytona USA, release my Dreamcast at home and play San Francisco Rush 2049 and later turn on my PS2 to play as Burnout and Need For Speed : Most wanted / Carbon.
Of course, I played tracks like Toca, Gran Turismo and one of the many iterations of the official Formula 1 series, but that wasn’t my thing. I haven’t seen the attraction and I still don’t see it, but here everything gets interesting.
My first experience with Mud was with Mud 3 on PS3. Unlike most racing simulators, it caught my attention, and it didn’t take me long to jump along to see who could get the best time on one of the many courses the game offers. Later I bought it for myself and fell in love immediately.
It’s really something special in a game like this to be able to put your foot in the pedals, come to a standstill and bomb it on the ground like an absolute madman. Unlike in Burnout, where you hardly ever have to brake, you really have to brake in the mud, but that’s part of the fun and the amount of drift required; believe me, my driving habits have allowed me to reach a good speed, and I have.
But before we begin the events: The more you promote the Dirt 5 campaign, the more stickers, sponsors, paints and designs you unlock. Customizing the car is only cosmetic, but each car comes with a simple basic design, plus 3 other unique options that allow you to work even if you need to unlock them by aligning them.
The same can be said of sponsors – each sponsor offers a range of benefits, from a better basic fee, a better total fee, individual stickers to really nice cookies. If you reach the maximum limit for a particular sponsor (level 15), you will get everything you can offer and are free to change sponsors at any time. Keep in mind that at certain times during the campaign this can have a negative effect on your reputation.
However, there is nothing to stop you staying with the same sponsor throughout the campaign. So, if you are only worried about currency based activation, this is a reliable option for you.
All sponsors have an official license, so expect Goodyear, Hoosier, Michelin and Sparco (and these are just a few examples). Although you can place up to 4 sponsor plates on each car you decorate with flowers, colours and designs of your choice, you will probably want to spend more time on the track than in the garage.
However, during the campaign you will almost certainly stick to a few selected cars and only focus on them when it comes to making quick and easy adjustments to be at your best for the next races.
Dirt 5 blocks the vehicle of your choice for the most suitable vehicles for the event. Although this means that you can’t run around the clock like your favorite car, it will push you out of your comfort zone and encourage you to improve your skills with a few cars.
It’s a good thing that with so many cars in each race category, you can quickly find your favourite. It is also worth mentioning that each vehicle has its own feel, with the steering and performance intelligently adapted to each car.
By the way, one of my all-time favorites is the old Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 (I think Eleanor/Unhorn left in 60 seconds), and although you can find this car in the game, it has a B rating for performance and handling, which makes it a mid-range car at its best.
Even though that didn’t stop me from trying (I’m still in first place), you could really feel the difference in control – it was hard, lethargic and very difficult to stay on top. This means that later on I almost exclusively used cars with at least one S in performance or handling, which means that the Mustang has never been used again.
In addition, I quickly put together two favourites that stood out and delivered some great performances – the Peugeot 205 and Lancia Stratos. These two cars were top quality and I had a lot of fun throwing them away and abusing them throughout the campaign. Really, it depends on personal preference.
If you are a beginner, you will find the default settings for the game with medium difficulty and automatic transmission. So if you are looking for a more complex task and the idea of grinding the gears to keep one step ahead, you will want to adjust it in the settings menu.
Personally, I was stuck with the default settings and in general everything seemed balanced, although sometimes I felt that the events could be simpler and sometimes more complicated.
One feature we don’t often see these days is the ability to play with our friends on a 4-player split screen, and that’s something Dirt 5 really supports. It is just a pity that it is not fully exploited in our current climate.
As the internet is our only option at the moment, it is very important to have a good connection, but I’ve had some connection problems and had to reboot the game (not the console) to reconnect every time it failed. I find it a bit boring, because I like to watch the leaders during the race.
This song was not on the list of known problems sent to me, and it’s hard to tell if it was on my site or on the game servers, but with the network errors called apricot and cherry, it didn’t really tell me anything. I find it strange that the game does not automatically reconnect every time it has chosen a backup connection.
Still, the game is a lot of fun, and even if it isn’t all sunshine and rainbows, I would go so far as to say that almost every event is exciting and entertaining enough to keep me on my toes. The only events I didn’t really like were the Sprint Kars wing race.
These cars make a very good left turn, but if you have to go straight into the next corner, it is incredibly easy to turn around and only do it once, which often costs you a race. Unfortunately, I see this more as a loss than a challenge.
Of course I hoped that as few of these events as possible would be organised, which is a pity, but they were the only racing events with which I had a real problem.
Then we have Pathfinder events – your extreme climbs in a car giant monster truck. They need certain abilities to control, but where they don’t have the ability to transform, my God, they make up for it with strength.
The idea is to line up before and after each jump/load to create a perfect trajectory to reach the finish in the shortest possible time. Even if I didn’t like these events, there’s definitely something funny about them. The only disadvantage is that the physics of the vehicle can become very mental if you land badly/tip (which often happens).
Then, the Stampede, these events force you to drive on the track with muscular trucks loaded with many tyres. They are excellent for creating momentum, but like many other events Dirt 5 has to offer, it takes a lot of skill to master them. Although I enjoyed these events, I always prefer to be fast and smart, so this one wasn’t for me, but I’m sure many of you will like the weight behind these cars.
Now let’s move on to the rally races – those point-to-point races – which are really fun. Instead of tracks, the Rally Raid takes you on a long route through terrain of varying difficulty. To master this event, you need to know your car inside out and out, because whether you’re on rocky mud, slippery asphalt, dirty mud or even snow, you need to know how the handles of your car differentiate between first and last place.
For the last time, my favorite event: We have Icebreaker events. That’s probably the funniest thing about drifting. There are two icebreaker tracks, one is just oval (I think of Nascar, but on a flat track), and the other is a long track with all kinds of bends and twists.
To obscure the runways, these scales are often reversed and additional weather influences are added to the mix. It’s easy to turn and slide along the walls, but once you’ve mastered each corner at the right speed and control, you’ll be on those icy slopes in no time.
Again the Peugeot 205 is very successful, but the Subaru Impreza works almost as well, the only thing that makes it smaller is its size and weight compared to a small pug.
I don’t want to ruin all the surprises for you, so I’ll leave the rest to your own discovery. Know that Gymkhana came back with the creator of Playground (we all wanted to create our own terribly complicated gymkhana events, didn’t we?) and a series of fun confrontations with other top performers to make a name for ourselves and trigger a really special joie de vivre.
You should know that Dirt 5 is visually remarkable. The graphics are really great, but not only that, it is a super smooth experience with almost no delay.
The races are fast and the constantly changing weather conditions keep you on the edge of your seat at every race. The effects of the weather are overwhelming, and you really want to fight nature itself when it rains hard.
During day and night races, but also in the snow, you better get used to watching your mini-map, because visibility is not always good. I think my screenshots speak for themselves, and I captured it all in a special game mode called Photo.
Even the best vocal performances of Nolan North and Troy Baker really help to liven up the game, because they involve you in a constant and plausible feud that always takes place between races.
And with singers like The Prodigy (Rip Keith), The Bloody Beetroots (those guys were really great) and even The Killers, the Dirt 5 soundtrack always sets the tone for fast, aggressive and funny races!
I spent a lot of time with Dirt 5 – long enough to finish the whole campaign and win a gold medal at almost every event. To give you a rough estimate of how long it will take to complete, I’ve done it in four days and 30 hours, but once you finish the campaign, you can always go back and repeat everything you’ve already done or just have fun playing online with old friends and new rivals.
Dirt 5 is a simple platinum game (if you don’t have a lot of time), with the only really difficult trophy where you have to score more than 30 km in a Gymkhana event. By the time I got there, I had almost 40,000, and although it took some time, it took much less time than I thought.
Unfortunately you will want to save your money, because when I launched the backup game today, I discovered that the latest update had completely erased all my achievements. This means that when I was online, my entire profile, all my income, all my cars, all my unlocked livers and paints that I had bought, used and decorated, disappeared.
Dirt 5 is a fantastic game, but it’s a terrible thing that can happen to anyone, and the developers are responsible for the fact that it never happens. I was only one platinum trophy away, so I was totally disappointed and couldn’t help but include it in my report.
The only trophy I have left is a 10 kilometer race, and I’m really surprised I didn’t get it during the campaign. However, it was a hard and disappointing blow for an otherwise perfect racing game.
Apart from the problems, I would even go so far as to say that the mud is not a race simulation at all, but rather a very special mix of racing drivers. He takes the best elements from arcade and simulation races, throws them into a mixer and misses them until they become something completely different.
This is a Dirt 5, and where many runners who came before have tried to attract racing fans in general, the Dirt 5 has managed to do so by blowing almost all runners out of the water, which is one of the most accessible, exciting and adrenaline-filled experiences there is.
Although I’m not going back to Dirt 5 in the near future (I’m not going to lose the whole game), I really enjoyed spending time with him, and if you notice that talented drivers (such as Motorstorm and Driveclub), it’s no wonder that he is one of the most polite, fun and receptive drivers out there.
A ton of love has been put into this game, and if you love racing, you will miss the glorious days of drifting in NFS: Underground, or do you just want a fairly long game with a lot of online and offline game modes you can dive into, with wheel support and free next generation updates? Then Dirt 5 is the game for you.
