When connecting my Fire TV Cube to my Samsung LED TV, the TV immediately switched from HDMI 1 to HDMI 2. I was unable to switch to HDMI 1 from HDMI 2, so I am unable to watch TV. I have tried both the HDMI cables that came with the Fire TV Cube and the HDMI-to-HDMI cable that I use with the TV. I have also tried restarting the TV and Fire TV Cube. The TV on screen says “no input signal” and the Fire TV Cube shows a black screen with the red power light on.

The Fire TV Cube is finally available on the market, finally giving us a Google Chromecast-style device in the living room. However, as you likely know by now, it is plagued by an unfortunate issue: the screen goes black as soon as the device boots up, and the only way to get rid of it is to either reboot the device or wait for the Fire TV Cube to automatically reboot. I’ll show you through a few steps how to either fix or bypass this issue!

In this article, I’ll help you troubleshoot the Fire TV Cube’s black screen, which can periodically appear for a few seconds when you’re watching programs, rendering it almost unusable. Sometimes the black screen can freeze and the program crashes completely. No Bueno!

️ Editor’s note: While most of the solutions offered here can also be applied to the Amazon Fire TV Stick, this article specifically addresses the black screen issues of the Fire TV Cube. I own a Cube and have tried all the troubleshooting solutions suggested here. My Fire Stick is gathering dust in a drawer, because I like the Cube’s voice controls with Alexa better than the little streaming stick.

Black screen of death Fire TV Cube

I was watching Agents of Shield on Netflix last night on my Amazon Fire TV Cube when suddenly this happened. A few seconds before Skye (or is it Daisy?) is about to shake the face of a poor android, the screen cuts out. I mean, we’re talking about black television here. One second, two seconds… We’re back. А ? I thought it was strange. At first I thought it was a Netflix bug, or maybe an irregularity in the Wi-Fi connection.

But no.

A few minutes later, it happened again. And that’s in a minute. And again in a few minutes. Now I’m a wreck. What’s an intrepid Marvel fan to do?

I just told Alexa to go to my new Disney+ app and play Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Of course, after a few minutes in which the new Captain America wielded the old Captain’s shield, the connection was broken again. I also tried Amazon Prime Video and the same problem occurred.

And again. Grrr. After a few more minutes of switching from the Fire TV Cube to the Roku, and then directly to the Netflix app on my Samsung Smart TV, I discovered that the problem was only with the Fire TV Cube.

Since the Cube is my favorite streaming device, this got me thinking about how I could set it up so Alexa can stream for me again. It appears that this is a common problem with the Fire TV Cube and Firestick. This is what I found after a long search on Amazon, Reddit and popular Facebook streaming groups and forums.

Troubleshooting schedule: 5 things to try

Here are the five easiest ways to fix your Fire TV Cube / Fire TV Box black screen problems.

Method 1: Restarting the Fire TV Cube

The first method to resolve the Fire TV Cube black screen issues is to simply restart the device.

Video

Here is a short video showing how to do it with the remote.  Can’t find the remote?  See the procedure below.

Procedure

If your Fire TV Cube has a temporary power outage, sometimes you can just restart the Cube.

Learn how to perform a full reboot here:

  1. Unplug the power adapter from the back of your Cube (or unplug the Cube, if that’s easier). Wait 10 to 20 seconds and then reconnect it to the power supply.

️ Attention: You can also press and hold the Select and Play/Pause buttons on the remote for five seconds each to restart the unit (see my video above).

  1. Amazon then advises to make sure the TV is turned on (yay!) and set to the correct HDMI input channel. For me, it’s HDMI 2. Here’s what it looks like on my Samsung TV.

  1. Also make sure all your audio-visual equipment, receivers and soundbars are turned on. This eliminates them if there is an addiction in your facility.

Next steps

Did this solve the problem? If so, go straight to my conclusion at the end. If not, let’s try the following method.

Method 2: Fire TV Cube Firmware Update

The second way to solve the Fire TV Cube black screen problem is to make sure you have the latest version of Fire OS installed on your device.

Video

Here is a short video I made to help you make sure you have the latest version.

Procedure

As the quick video above shows, updating the Fire TV Cube firmware to the latest version of Fire OS is easy.

  1. On the home screen, go to the Settings icon on the far right [it looks like a cogwheel]. This will take you to the Settings menu. If you are not yet at the Home screen, you may need to press the Home or Back key to get there,
  2. Click on About.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Click on Install Update.

When an update is available, the Fire TV Cube installs the latest version and also updates the timestamp on the right side. You just want to make sure it means your Fire TV Cube is up to date.

Method 3: Disable HDMI CEC

The next method to solve the Fire TV Cube’s black screen problem is to disable the HDMI CEC setting.

Video

I made this short video to show you how to do it in less than a minute.

Procedure

HDMI-CEC is a standard that enables additional HDMI controls, such as waking the Fire TV Cube from sleep mode. Some users report that disabling this feature fixes the black screen problem:

To disable HDMI CEC on the Fire TV, do the following

  1. From the main menu, go to the Settings icon on the far right [it looks like a cogwheel].

  1. Go to Display and Sound.

  1. Press the HDMI CEC Device Control button to turn it off. Your screen should look like this:

Method 4: HDMI cable austauschen

️♂Tip: Before replacing the cable completely, you can use Amazon’s official HDMI extender. The Cube doesn’t come with a proper HDMI cable, which is annoying. Connect the extension cable supplied with the Cube to the existing cable and the other end to the HDMI port on your TV.

If this doesn’t work, I suggest you replace the HDMI cable you have connected to your Fire TV Cube. That’s the only step that worked for me. I bought a newer HDMI cable on Amazon, replaced my existing cable with this one and it worked fine. No more black screen of death! Here’s the cable I chose:

Now I’m back for a few episodes of Agents of Shield and I keep watching. I will update this article immediately if that changes for any reason.

In my case, everything points to the HDMI cable being faulty. In retrospect, it makes sense, since I used the old cable that came with my kids’ old PS3 game console.

Method 5: Contact Amazon for a new device

If replacing the HDMI cable didn’t work and you haven’t lost your patience yet, check out the Amazon links on the Fire TV Cube’s support page for more steps and troubleshooting videos.

As much as I hate to tell you this, there is another possibility that others have pointed to as the cause of the Fire TV Cube’s black screen problem. This means that your Fire TV Cube may be defective.

In all my research and troubleshooting, this is the rarest problem, but several people have complained that this is the only way to solve it.

If you’ve tried all of the above and nothing works, send an email to Amazon Support. Interestingly, there is no way to contact them directly on the support page above. Online technical support is very difficult to find on the Amazon website, but here is a link to chat live with an Amazon agent.

You can get product support for your Fire TV Cube through this chat.

Explain to the Amazon employee that you have tried all the recommended troubleshooting methods, but nothing is working and you want them to replace your Fire TV cube. Others have managed to get an immediate replacement from Amazon.

Fire TV Cube black screen: What worked for you?

Have you, like me, managed to get rid of the annoying black screen on the Fire TV Cube?

What method did you try? While some simple methods have worked for the Amazon Fire Stick and Cube, the most likely scenario for many seems to be a faulty HDMI cable or connection.

Replacing the old cable with a new HDMI cable helped me. I hope it doesn’t happen again for a long time.

Leave a comment below and let me know. Perhaps your solution will be useful to other readers.

Until next time, have fun with your Fire TV Cube! This is definitely my new favorite remote.
