In the next section, we will take a closer look at the overall design, the build quality and the functions the Samsung Odyssey G9 is equipped with. Taking the recently improved refresh rate out of the equation, it will be interesting to see how the Samsung Odyssey G9 compares to other super-ultra-wide monitors for the same price – not to mention the older 49-inch versions of Samsung.

Samsung Odyssey G9 (C49G95T) Review

Version

In terms of design, this monitor is absolutely flawless. I mean, it’s like a cross between the shielding of the Starship Enterprise and Iron Man – what more do you want? Not to mention the humorous metaphors, this thing is certainly in its own design niche – and that doesn’t even take into account the size of this thing.

But size is probably a good start – this thing is absolutely huge. Not only is it more than one meter wide, but with the bracket attached it is also more than 400 mm deep, making it (easily) one of the largest monitors we have tested. Like the rest of the design of this monitor, the stand is elegant but cluttered in shape and size. The back of the screen has a number of subtle design features that make it beautiful. However, I don’t know exactly who this is for, because you’ll rarely see the back of this panel – unless you have a highly customized configuration. On the back you can see a swirling pattern covering the top of the stand. This monitor displays a single area of RGB light. Still, it’s one of the most unique RGBs I’ve ever seen, and it’s very beautiful – too bad you can’t see it when it’s used.

All in all, I find the overall picture of this monitor very futuristic. And we love him.

Quality of construction

Then we have the quality of construction, an area where the last monitor we tested excelled. Given that this monitor sells for $1,299, one can hope that the quality of the construction is absolutely flawless. Well, let’s see.

After a short period of use of this monitor, I can safely say that I am a bit confused when it comes to the quality of the building. Before we focus on the negative points, let’s discuss the positive points.

Despite the fact that the screen consists mainly of plastic, it is very robust. The support is robust and relatively easy to assemble, as is the overall design of the panel itself. When you take it out of the box, there is no folding or distortion in the display itself – it looks like a massive rock. However, as we will see in a moment, the overall stability is my main concern for this panel.

Other positive aspects are the quality of the input data, all of which are well processed. The OSD controllers are very easy to use and also look very well designed. What’s more, the rims are among the best I’ve seen in terms of overall build quality. There is virtually no deformation between the panel cladding and the outer edge, indicating that this panel has a clear emphasis on detail.

However, we haven’t fully talked about the elephant in the room yet, sustainability. Although the physical build quality of this monitor looks good, its stability certainly leaves something to be desired. I don’t know if it’s just because of the sign we bought, but this thing swings a lot – which is not surprising considering the impressive weight of 14.1 kg. The problem is not only stability, but the G9 tends to sag at a certain height – something I’ve never seen before in a monitor.

So, on the whole, some success in terms of quality of construction. However, the main problem – support – can easily be replaced by something more robust.

Control cabinet cladding

The panel coating used for the Samsung Odyssey G9 is anti-reflective with a hardness of 3H in a matt finish. We see that this has had a good effect on many modern monitors that reflect ambient light very well. It also helps to muffle other reflective surfaces so you can concentrate on the most important thing: playing.

Wheels

If you compare the Odyssey to the ASUS ROG XG43V, the bezel is quite impressive. But in reality they are only 2 mm larger – 11 mm. On the other hand, the lower frame is much smaller (4 mm to be precise) than the XG, which measures 17 mm. Although I’m not a big fan of the black bars, they’re not the worst I’ve seen and they don’t take anything away from my experience as a spectator.

Position

We’ve already mentioned the positive and negative points of the stand’s construction quality, but we haven’t talked about its functionality yet. When it comes to ultra-wide-angle monitors, the Odyssey G9 offers versatile adjustment options.

In terms of modifications, users can expect the following;

  • Forward tilt – 3 degrees
  • Reverse slope – 13 degrees
  • Clockwise rotation – 15 degrees
  • Turn clockwise – 15 degrees
  • Height – 120 mm

That’s more than enough to find the perfect viewing position – if you can keep it quiet. It doesn’t offer many hinges, but if you’re honest, you don’t need it. He doesn’t think the functionality of the booth is compromised, it’s true.

Inputs

The inputs are located at the rear of the control cabinet and all cables must be inserted vertically. The Samsung Odyssey G9 features 2 USB 3.0 ports, 1 HDMI 2.0 port, 2 DisplayPort 1.4 ports and 1 3.5mm audio connection – a perfect cocktail of inputs for various gaming/workstation scenarios.

MTO

Finally, the Samsung G9 offers an absolutely fantastic screen display. Like ASUS, Samsung has opted for a joystick instead of a multi-button alternative, less functional and much more distracting.

Navigating the screen couldn’t be easier. Just press the joystick and move it in the desired direction. It’s as simple as that. To exit, simply click the left mouse button until the menu closes.

In the menu many options are available to the user, including color settings, brightness, contrast, refresh rate, VRR, adaptive synchronization and much more. It’s one of the most comprehensive on-screen menus I’ve ever been allowed to use. And, as we’ll soon discover, it outperforms the competition by not limiting brightness in any colour. A boost for the OSD on this one.
