At the time of the update, the best Ryzen 9 laptops are based on the Zen3 processors in the Ryzen 5000 series, with the Ryzen 9 5900HX being the most powerful models. The Ryzen 9 5980HX was also announced as the best mobile variant of the Ryzen 5000 series, but it is not yet available in a retail product.
This article highlights the specifications and performance of these Ryzen 9 platforms and provides a detailed list of all laptops based on this hardware.
In general, there are two types of Ryzen-9 laptops: the H and HX equipped laptops (5900HX, 4900H) with a power of 45+W and the thinner, lighter form factors based on the HS subseries of Ryzen-9 APUs (5900HS, 4900HS), high-end and efficient bunkers with a power of 35+W. Of course, they can all run at different powers, and their performance varies from product to product, as it depends heavily on the quality of each implementation, the thermal module and the overall design. We have therefore linked our thorough evaluations below, where possible, with details of all our findings.
We won’t go into detail about the benchmark results in this article, but we will take a little look at what we can normally expect from the latest Ryzen 9 processors, with more details on the tests we mentioned earlier. And then there are these detailed lists of available Ryzen 9 5900HX/5900HS laptops, as well as models released in previous years based on Ryzen 9 4900H/4900HS hardware that are still available in stores, likely at steep discounts.
So first, a brief specification of the Ryzen 9 H and HS Zen 3 and Zen 2 processors:

The H and HX models operate at a higher power and base clock than the HS models, but are otherwise very similar within the same generation. On the other hand, the difference between the 4000 and 5000 may seem small on paper, but it really is, thanks to the various IPC improvements and optimizations available with the Zen3 cores, plus the extra amount of cache. The 5000 series APUs also feature the more powerful Vega 8 integrated graphics card, but that doesn’t matter here, as all of these Ryzen 9 laptops are equipped with dedicated graphics cards that take over more of the GPU.
Anyway, for each of these 9, there are also Ryzen-7 consumer alternatives, still 8C/16T processors, but also running slightly fewer hours. Since Ryzen 9 configurations are generally expensive, I think most of you will be interested in the mid-range Ryzen 7 models, which we will discuss in a separate article.
To be fair, Ryzen 9 platforms are also used in more expensive products and are usually available in more expensive configurations. Unlike the Ryzen 4000 generation, which was not widely available and was mostly found in low-end products with mid-range graphics (e.g. 2020 Zephyrus G15 and G14, HP Omen 15, Lenovo Legion 5), Ryzen 5000 hardware is now available in a high-end design with graphics up to RTX 3080 (and AMD RDNA2 dGPUs in the future), large displays, no-compromise builds, and the latest features available starting in 2021. At the same time, there are still cheaper mid-range Ryzen 9 5000 models available for those of you with a more limited budget.

These Ryzen 9 5000 HS APUs are really impressive for the amount of power needed to implement the 5900HX, and the gap between the 4000 series and the Ryzen 9 5000s is significant in single-core, multi-threaded CPU tests with longer workloads. We’ll see how these Ryzen 9s compare to the Intel options in a separate article.
With that in mind, here are the lists of announced and rumored portable 5980HS/5900HS/4900HS models, with the Ryzen 9 5900HX/4900H complete with additional options. Please note that these lists are still being worked on and that we are constantly updating them with new entries. This zone is reserved for light and compact constructions. Most are based on the Ryzen 9 HS 35W platform, either the Ryzen 5980HS/5900HS 2021 or the previous generation 4900HS, but some are still built on Ryzen H powerhouse hardware.
The 5980HS is currently only available in the Flow X13 Supernova limited series, while the 5900HS can only be found in the 2021 ROG Zephyrus G14/G15. This may change in the future.

Asus has exclusive access to AMD Ryzen HS hardware for now (until Q3 2020), and we will be updating the Ryzen 9 4900HS ultraportable PCs again.
This section covers normal-sized laptops built on the 45+W Ryzen 9 5900HX and 4900H hardware platforms. The Ryzen 9 5980HX is not yet available in stores, but that may change in the near future.
Also note that most AMD-based gaming laptops, such as. B. Nitro 5, Legion 5, Omen 15, are not available with Ryzen 9 processors, but only in Ryzen 7 5800H/4800H configurations, which we covered in this separate article.
Additionally, most Eluktronics/Schenker/XMG/Aftershock models based on TongFang and Clevo barebone designs are also not available with Ryzen 9 5900HX processors at the time of the update, most likely due to a lack of dedicated resources in the current global situation. That should change in the coming months, and I’m particularly looking for a Prometheus 17 model Ryzen 9 configuration with an RTX 3080 150+W GPU, which is currently the most powerful AMD laptop configuration on the market.
